Course Information
Description The scientific study of human society, including ways in which groups, social institutions, and individuals affect each other. Causes of social stability and social change are explored through the application of various theoretical perspectives, key concepts, and related research methods of sociology. Analysis of social issues in their institutional context may include topics such as social stratification, gender, race/ethnicity, and deviance.
Required Textbooks Textbook Purchasing Statement: A student attending Lamar State College Port Arthur is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college-affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer.

Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
  • Compare and contrast the basic theoretical perspectives of sociology.
  • Identify the various methodological approaches to the collection and analysis of data in sociology.
  • Describe key concepts in sociology.
  • Describe the empirical findings of various subfields of sociology.
  • Explain the complex links between individual experiences and broader institutional forces.

Assignment Details and Grade Determination

Your grade will be determined by the following:
Details Percentage of Final Average
Discussion Board Questions/Responses There will be weekly discussion board questions.  You will respond to two questions and reply to two of your classmates responses. These are due on the Sunday of that week at 11:59 pm. There will be 14 discussion board questions. Each will be worth 2% of your overall grade. 28%
Chapter Quizzes Each week there will be a quiz over the weeks chapter reading. These quizzes will close at the designated deadline and cannot be made up if the deadline is missed. These are due on the Sunday of that week at 11:59 pm. Overall there will be 14 quizzes for the semester. Each quiz grade is worth 2% of overall grade. 28%
Midterm and Final Exams There will be a midterm and a final exam. The midterm will cover the content from Chapters 1-7 and the final exam will cover the content from Chapters 8-14. Each exam will be worth 10% of overall grade. 20%
Journals There will be two journals in the semester. Each is worth 12%. These are due on the Sunday of that week at 11:59 pm. 24%

COVID 19 Information The Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) Student Code of Conduct COVID 19 Policy requires students who have been diagnosed with COVID 19 to report their condition directly to their local health department. Students should also contact their course faculty to report their quarantine status. In addition, this policy requires all students to wear face coverings when directly exposed to COVID 19 in compliance with the criteria included in the policy.
